Music in the Park in Oak Ridge NC

After Saturday night church at The Summit in Kernersville, I headed out to Oak Ridge arriving at the Shelter #2 at the Town Park just in time for the band to finish up their first set. That gave me a chance to set up my chair, grab a hamburger meal from the concession stand, buy a couple of raffle tickets, and chat with a few friends. After finishing my last bite, the band struck up the music once again. It's dusk but still light enough to capture a sampling of The Grassfields and a close up photo. Here they are.

Wish I would have caught a video of the Orange Blossom Special performed by a young lady whose name is Amanda from WFU and hales from northern Virginia. There were several numbers I felt I should jump to my feet for a little flatfooting. But alas, I would have been the lone ranger. No one was dancing. This is a talented blue grass band.

It's a bit chilly and one finger on each hand is frozen. The chill in the air has just caused people to wrap up and huddle a little closer together. One group brought a portable coffee table with them. They are gathered around it with their favorite beverages and snacks. The kids are walking, kicking a ball, or helping direct traffic. The park is spacious and clean with sidewalks winding through for great walking or biking. And there are very nice ball fields.

I just met reporter Laura Pullins from the Northwest Observer who decided to take my picture. So, you may see me on the Town of Oak Ridge facebook page.

The next Music in the Park event is on June 21 with Robert Tilley and the Hard Times Band. Come on out and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this park and peaceful town.

  1. Fran,
We're so glad you could come and that you enjoyed the event. We have a monthly Music in the Park event planned every month through September. They are all at Shelter #2 (look for signs for parking from Linville Road). Each event will be held on a Saturday evening, 6-8:30 p.m., and is free, but a donation will be taken to pay the band. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on, and bring food or buy some from the concession stand. These are family-friendly events, and they are the kind of thing that make Oak Ridge the great community that it is.

Here's the Music in the Park schedule for the rest of the summer:
June 21 - Robert Tilley & The Hard Times Band (country/bluegrass/gospel)
    July 26 - Sidetrip (country/rock)
Aug. 16 - Glory Street Quartet (gospel)
    Sept. 20 - Tyler Millard Band (blues/pop)

Here's a couple other events happening in the Oak Ridge park. RidgeFest, our huge annual celebration, is May 29-31. The event features everything from carnival rides, a 5K/1-mile race, food, live music and ends the night of May 31 with fireworks. This event is put on by the Merchants Association of Oak Ridge and Town of Oak Ridge. Visit www.merchantsofoakridge.com for more details.

Movies in the Park will be held June 14 and July 12 at Shelter 2 and will be sponsored by The Summit Church. Family-friendly movies will be shown beginning at dusk. Look on the Town of Oak Ridge website for forthcoming details.

Thanks for the plug for Oak Ridge.
